As much as I love shopping for new shoes, I undoubtedly understand why it ends in frustration for so many women. It's usually a struggle between the practical fall footwear that suspiciously looks like a nursing shoe hybrid, or a "rugged" fur trimmed bootie that judging by the 4 inch heel is completely non-functional.
However this season, your feet be relieved to find that comfort and style has merged in the form of a delectably chic kitten heel. With its high fashion cameo on the runways of Valentino and Prada, to the choice footwear of First Lady Michelle Obama, low kitten heels have become synonymous with effortless style.
To work this modern look, you don't have to speak the sole-ful language of Manolo Blahnik or Jimmy Choo, but there are a few style tips worth noting.
Girl Power. A kitten heel paired with a skirt is a fashionable way to pick up on the season's "Lady-Like" trend that swept the runways. Think gorgeous A-lines, fluid circle skirts, and of course the no-nonsense pencil skirt. Wear paired with a blouse or fitted knit for timeless, feminine style. Round toes are always a classic choice, while a pointy toe kitten heel will work to visually slim the foot.
Texture. Although the cable knee high socks of Prada may be a stretch for the day to day, pay close attention to the concept. By pairing your kitten heel with a textured tight or trouser sock, you will add a splash of personality and style to your look. Even subtly ribbed hosiery in a complimentary color will add a bit of intrigue to an otherwise mundane office look.
Lift. The subtle lift of the kitten heel looks fantastic with the cut of a full leg trouser, creating the perfect balance between comfort and polish. The lower heel also makes this a practical choice to pair with bootcut, straight leg, and skinny denims for a comfy but cute day look. Do run your errands in style.
And speaking of running around...here are a few pointers on walking in heels.
Walking in heels is always a bit of a challenge, and for the newbie or those just tired of the teeter totter I recommend a kitten heel. The average height of a kitten heel is about 1 inches, providing a considerable step down from the average 3 inch heels that line the sales floor. Simply stated? No need for intimidation. All that is required is a little practice.
Posture. Every story begins the same. Keep your back straight and your shoulders slightly back. This will promote an even distribution of your weight supported by the heel.
Three Step Process. Take three steps forward. Why? Who ends in just one step? In order to become comfortable in new heels, however low, your body needs to adjust to the added height. Does it feel a little strange? This is normal. The muscles in your legs are being utilized in a way that is different from when you wear flats. As your body learns the memory of the heel, this feeling will dissipate.
Danger, Curves Ahead. When walking in heels there is no reason or logic in exaggerating the movement of your hips. Walk naturally allowing your hips to move naturally to the rhythm of your strides.
Dance Like Nobody's Watching. Yes, I am serious. Dancing around in heels is a fun way to adjust to shift of your body's movement in heels. Also the off balance movement will train your body to quickly recover when on the verge of falling over. If you are in any way clumsy like I am, this is a necessity.
Not sure where to shop this footwear trend? From stunning to sweet, try any major retailer or shoe boutique for a cute kitten heel options. Purrfect.
